Did you know snakes drag fish up onto the bank to wait until they expire prior to dragging them back to their watery banquet halls? Now I do. This photo was snapped on the pebbly precipices of the Qualicum estuary, just below the sanctuary for swallows, kingfishers, the rare wild swan. Heat of noon. I saw the fish-mouth gawp, wheeze, black eye-dots glazing skywards. The snake beautifully, disturbingly rapacious. A stink of sulfur, seaweed. Eagles on nearby snags. I just watched. There was nothing else to do. It simply wasn’t my business.
